I have a rx-8 that is going through greddy turbo and interceptor x installation right now. I will have the car back tomorrow, but I wanted to know what driving habits I should be careful not to pull on the car? I know red lining to 9k is out of the question correct? This will be my first turbocharged vehicle, so I am a bit nervous. Thanks

you can still drive it to 9k.

though if you're using the greddy turbo, you'll max out around 7,000 rpm. the power declines from there.

on the stock car, you max out around 8,200 rpm.

There really isn't much to worry about with it turbo charged. The only thing you should do differently is:

1. Don't drive it hard till it's warmed up. Usually 5-8 minutes after it first started up.

2. Don't boost the car then park it and turn off. The turbo gets really hot and if you park it immediately after boosting, you can cool the oil - which will gunk stuff up. I usually take it easy the last few minutes before I plan on stopping to park.

Was wondering if running the greddy with the cat would be an issue. Heard a small rumor that it would melt the cat. Which could lead to potentially starting a fire. I rather run the turbo set up with the cat, however if it's a problem I will tell my installer to gut it.

most people run it with the cat.

worse case, if your cat dies, your exhaust will clog up and you'll be unable to accelerate. So you'll know immediately if there is an issue. The exhaust will get hot when it clogs, but it's not like clogging will result with a fire.

Why is it that there is no more power after about 7000 rpm with a turbo? Is there anything that can be done to remedy that?

That isn't a true statement. There is no more power with the greddy journal bearing turbo because it's undersized! Once over 7k rpm, the pressure will drop down to 6 psi or so, thus the power drops off quickly.

If you get a properly sized turbo, like the BHR/MM turbo kit with a custom 3071R turbo, it can flow enough for 400 whp but still have the fastest spool time. I can get 12 psi at 2,800 rpm with a properly configured boost controller.

So with the gt 3071R turbo it is able to supply the same boost, with a properly configured boost controller, from 2800 rpm to 9000 rpm? really great fast replies thanks.

exactly. But there is more to it than that.

the 3071R flows more air. So at 9 psi on both the 3071R and the greddy turbo, the 3071R will produce approx 50 more whp and 40 more torque.

You can also go to higher PSI because the charge temps are lower.

To me, the biggest advantage is water cooled and real ball bearings. The greddy turbo has journal bearings and they tend to wear out after a year or so of usage. At which point your car will smoke a lot as oil escapes out into the exhaust system.
