you notice how the stock grill is partially blocked off. now mazda had to of done this for a reason. i was wondering, if I remove this would it let too much air in and create too much wind resistance. I've looked around for replacement grills but all i could find were ones that just bolt over the stock. i was thinking of just buying the material and fabricating it my self. i want the extra air for the ram air intake but im worried the drag will slow me down and hurt performance more than the extra air flow will help performance.

You'd be fine doing this. In fact, if you want to take it a step further, check out racing beat's ram air duct. It funnels air directly into your intake box.

i noticed that as well. when i pulled off my stock bumper i found that the part that is covered is where the styrofoam "Bumper" is located. i also have the racing beat intake on my 8 and you will have to remove the foam piecr for the ram air duct to fit in place. quite easy to install i thought.
