I've been thinking about pulleys and I read quite a bit on them. The only thing that i can't figure out is whether or not to get them. From what i understand: pulleys don't give any gains.....but we've heard this about every aftermarket part for the RX-8. Should I underdrive or not underdrive. I can't seem to figure this out. Is it worth it? Would lighter pullies do the same trick? Why do some sets come with 1 pulley while others come with 2?
Heh, I know you probably hate my newbish questions, but at least I know you'll answer them since you're trying to get this site going, and I'm sure that there are plenty of people that have these basic questions. |

I did some more research and it appears that Unorthodox SS Ultra Pulley Set seems to be the way to go. It's the only set that replaces all 3 pulleys while reducing weight while slightly underdriving (11% i think it is). I didn't want anything too underdriven to compromise any part of the car and the lighter weight from what i understand is def a plus. Will have to order them soon, unless somebody convinces me otherwise.
Sigh, more parts to add to the list. |

pulleys can't give you additional power since they can't generate power. What they do is change the ratio that they're spinning with, which in turn means less power used to spin your accessories.
I've considered it, but frankly, there's a ton of supporting mods for my turbo system that I'm long backlogged with stuff I could get before pulleys.
Personally, I would think lighter weight rims would give you more of an advantage over pulleys, since the stock rims are 20-22 lbs each. But a decent set of 17-18 lbs rims are $$$.
Also consider getting more than one set of pulleys. If you go for the one kit that has 2 underdriven at 22%, you can match it up with the greddy kit that cones with the third pulley. It'll still come out to about the same price or less, and give you better returns. Unless you have big audio hardware or problems with a/c right now, you should be okay with the higher underdrive pulley. |

| I considered mixing and matching, the only thing I'm worried about is that some pulley sets come with different belts and I don't want to get 2 incompatable pulley sets. That's why I figured the Unorthodox racing complete set would be perfect for me. |

| Although the performance gains from a UD pulley are modest, under driving does a hell of a lot more than simply lightening the pulleys a bit. The most cost effective and generally best regarded pulley is the Agency Power UD Pulley. Its 25% under driven (its an ec shaft pulley so you only have to replace 1) and it includes belts and fasteners. The biggest benefit IMO is actually cooling as the stock water pump cavitates in the upper rpm ranges. The underdrive pulley keeps this from happening and helps keep our hot running rotary motors a little cooler when wound out. |

| A bit off topic, but I couldn't do pulleys this month. sales@autornd.com has a really good deal on slotted/drilled rotors with black rotor hats (yay for no more rust!) that I couldn't pass up. |

| Bought my pulleys today. Went with the Unorthodox set. Got a great deal on a new set. Now, I just need to get my car back from the shop to install them. |

| I got the Unorthodox pullies in mine and I love them. definately noticed some throttle response and more torque at lower RPM's. I read that the AC wouldnt work as good but I barely noticed....AC still came out freezing. I dont know if it would be a problem with a turbo, but at one point I was thinking about getting the Petit racing supercharger and I inquired with them if pullies would be a problem and they said yes it would be. I think their kit comes with its own crank pulley anyway |
