There is a aftermarket clutch that the dealer installed for me when I was getting warrenty work done. Reverse was popping out of gear.It was a 3 puke clutch from Exeddy..

Hmmm, this is an upgraded RX-8 transmission, I don't have specifics on the new gears, but it's possible they cryo treated them.

That's an awesome picture. Not very often you get to see something like that opened up.

the stock rx8 gearbox and clutch are more than burly enough for any NA car, and even mild FI. If it failed, if either had some sort of manufactuing defect, lubrication issues or it was abused.

Ok so i bought a 2004 rx 8 months ago the tires in the back that were bald and the clutch was at 30% with 19000 miles on it. So the dealer replaced the tires and away i went. A few months later and 2k miles my transmission would no longer stay in reverse. My local mazda shop took about 3weeks to do anything, so i really didnt want to take it there and hear its nothing. Well later in the week the transmiision like snapped and no longer worked.
They replaced it, and said " your clutch is worn we can put a new one in for 700 or you can provide us with a aftermarket one. I called the local parts shop and got a clutch. They put it in no questions asked. It took them 21 days to replace the transmission. About this time its now fall here and starting to snow so i put the car away for winter.
So its nice out now and my transmission does the same thing . no longer goes into reverse and is now scrambled. They say " we wont cover it because of the aftermarket clutch."
"Im like you guys put it in and never said anything about voiding the warrenty". they replyed we will look at it.
Everytime I called I get some resonse or excuse why their only mazda tech hasnt looked at it. Im still fighting with the dealer. He changes his mind everyday. It has now been 2 weeks since the car has not been touched. Yesturday I called them and asked them whats going on they said " we are not covering it because of abuse."
Keep in mind the car has been outside for 2 weeks untouched. I asked them how they came to this they said " we dont see alot of rx8 come in here with that problem. So at this point i get my attorny involved who happens to be my uncle. He was unable to get ahold of the service manager.
So today they called me back and said "Your attorney was tring to contact us and we were unable to talk with him but, we want to tear down the transmission to prove weather or not its abused".
"When i asked them again who is qualified to make that call on how the transmission failed and what caused I recieved i Dunno.
On top of this they want me to pay for the labor to take the transmission out and do a teardown. which was qouted as $482.00. So plz what do you guys think. |

I know the cars built before nov 2003 had a much greater chance of transmission problems. I'll try to get someone I know who had a lot of problems comment, since he had first hand experience on this topic.

As Jason had mentioned, cars prior to November of 2003 were notorious for gearbox issues. The problem was not only the gearbox, but it was also the clutches. Swelling clutch lines caused clutches to improperly and partially disengage causing grinding despite the clutch pedal being completely depressed. Theres TSBs addressing the clutch hard to disengage issue and theres also internal documents showing there is bad shift forks going around. Your best bet is to try to get them to prove you abused it. Keep pressing the issue until they give in, call MNAO and voice your opinion. Ask to speak to consumer compliance. Ill be back to link you when the site is back up.
